When you’re in need of a prescription, it can be difficult to find a reliable way to get the medicine you need. Luckily, there are ways to get prescriptions online with telehealth.

However, there are some nuances and rules to consider, depending on your state laws. Some states require a physical exam before a prescription can be written. Others will allow a secure video consultation or online questionnaire before the prescription is written.

1. Schedule an Appointment with Your Doctor

Many times, it’s difficult to schedule an appointment with your doctor. This is because they are constantly busy and have to keep their office running smoothly.

That’s why it’s important to be prepared and make an effort to schedule your appointment as early as possible. This will allow you to avoid a long wait in the waiting room of the hospital or General Practice Clinic.

You should also bring to the consultation information on your medical records, Medicare cards and medications (prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, vitamins and herbal remedies) with you to your appointment. Some doctors recommend making a list of what you have and how often you take it, which will help the doctor remember what he’s talking about during your appointment.

The laws governing telehealth vary from state to state, so be sure to check with your state’s medical board to see what rules apply. However, most states will allow you to obtain a prescription from a AHPRA registered health-care professional online through a video visit or phone call.

2. Fill Out a Prescription Request Form

Depending on your health plan and your state’s laws, the process to get your hands on a prescription can be anything from simple to complicated. If appropriate, your provider may prescribe your medicines for you at the time of consultation, in some cases with regard restricted medications, drugs of addiction, S8 under TGA approval or those that need authority approvals to claim PBS billing you may need to wait.  Your healthcare professional will advise at the time of the appointment.

The booking form will ask you to provide your name, address, date of birth, phone number and medical details. It may also ask for your preferred pharmacy and some details about your medications.

3. Send the Form to Your Pharmacy

You can send your prescription request directly from our booking website, or your preferred online pharmacy. It is also easy to download, export, or print the form.

Many unsafe online pharmacies use fake “storefronts” to fool you into thinking they’re safe and reputable. These websites often sell medicine that could have been manufactured anywhere, with little care or concern for safety and effectiveness.

Some medicines sold by these websites can also be diluted, contain fake or expired ingredients and may not have the active ingredient you need to treat your condition.

4. Pickup or Delivery of Your Prescription Online

If you’re not sure how to get your prescription filled, ask your doctor or pharmacist. They will usually know the answer to your question and can direct you to a pharmacy near you that offers the service.

Many patients fill their prescriptions at their local brick-and-mortar pharmacies. This is a fast and easy way to pick up your medicine, especially if you aren’t sure what the doctor prescribed.

However, you may also choose to go to an online pharmacy to have your medications posted directly to your home. Some of these websites and services even offer repeats.

You may need to provide your doctor with the name, strength and Rx number of each prescription so that they can update their records. You can do this by calling, stopping by in person or requesting transfer services online (if your new pharmacy offers this service).

If you are going to pick up your prescription, make sure you have your ID and prescription card with you when you do so. Depending on your state’s regulations, you may need to provide proof of insurance or other details before the pharmacy can issue your prescription.
